UAE to Oman border for Musandam: the 2026 rules, fees and process
The Al Dara border is the only land crossing for tourist traffic into Musandam. The rules are simple, but they change every year or two. Here is what is current in 2026, from the operator that handles 40+ self-drive border crossings a week.
The Al Dara border post (sometimes called Al Wajajah on the Oman side) is the only land crossing for tourist traffic into the Musandam Peninsula. It sits on the RAK–Musandam road, about 90 minutes from Khasab. The crossing is straightforward, but the rules change occasionally — last updated April 2025, with the next review due in October 2026.
We handle 40–60 self-drive border crossings a week for our guests. This guide is the document we send to each one, with their passport details filled in.
Who needs an Oman visa?
Almost everyone. The exceptions are GCC nationals (UAE, Saudi, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman). Everyone else needs one of three things:
1. A tourist visa on arrival (50 AED). Most western, GCC-resident Asian and several other nationalities qualify. Valid 14 days. Multiple entry. 2. A 1-day border permit (50 AED). Available to UAE residents with eligible professions (engineer, doctor, accountant, business owner, government staff, teacher, etc.). Valid 24 hours, single entry. 3. An eVisa from the Royal Oman Police portal (evisa.rop.gov.om). From 25 OMR (~240 AED) for a 10-day visa, 50 OMR (~480 AED) for a 30-day visa. Required for some nationalities. Apply at least 24 hours in advance.
What fees should I expect?
At the Al Dara border, in cash in AED:
1. UAE exit fee: 35 AED per person. 2. Oman entry visa or 1-day border permit: 50 AED per person. 3. Oman vehicle insurance (if not already covered): 100 AED for 1 day, 175 AED for up to 7 days. Buy at the RAK-side counter, 200 m before the UAE exit booth. 4. Return trip: same fees on the way back. The UAE re-entry is free.
Total cash for a 2-person day trip: 50 + 35 + 50 + 35 + 100 = 270 AED, plus whatever you want to spend in Khasab.
What documents to bring
Originals, not photocopies. The border officers do not accept digital copies on phones.
1. Passport valid for 6+ months from your date of entry. 2. UAE residence visa (residents) or UAE tourist entry stamp. 3. If driving: original Mulkiya. 4. If driving a rental car: written NOC from the rental company authorising cross-border use. 5. Printed Oman vehicle insurance (if you bought at the RAK-side counter). 6. Cash in AED for the fees above.
The process, step by step
1. Drive up to the RAK-side insurance counter (200 m before the UAE exit booth). Buy your Oman vehicle insurance if you do not have it already. 2. Drive through the UAE exit. The boom gate is automated for Salik-tagged cars. Pay the 35 AED exit fee per person at the cashier booth. 3. Drive 800 m through no-man’s-land. There is one free toll gate on the Oman side. 4. Stop at the Oman entry. Park the car, walk to the visa counter, pay 50 AED per person, get the visa stamp in your passport. 5. Drive to the Oman customs booth. Show the visa stamp and the vehicle insurance. The officer waves you through. 6. Drive the 90-minute mountain road to Khasab.
Total time on a quiet weekday morning: 22 minutes. On a Friday afternoon: 75 minutes.
Common mistakes to avoid
We have seen all of these in 2025:
1. Forgetting the original Mulkiya. The officer at the RAK-side insurance counter will not sell you insurance without it. 2. Renting from a budget agency that does not provide a cross-border NOC. You will be turned around. 3. Having a passport with less than 6 months validity. We have seen 4 guests turned back in 2025 for this. 4. Trying to cross with an expired UAE residence visa. The UAE exit will reject you. 5. Trying to cross on a Friday at 16:00. The line can be 90 minutes. 6. Bringing alcohol in the car. The Oman customs will confiscate it. The UAE side does not allow re-entry of undeclared alcohol either.
