Musandam & Khasab FAQ
Quick, no-fluff answers to the most common questions we get from guests planning a Musandam trip. Updated for 2026 from our front-desk team in Khasab.
Planning & Visas
Do UAE residents need a visa for Musandam?
Yes — UAE residents need either a 50 AED 1-day border permit (issued at the Al Dara border counter) or a longer tourist visa. Bring Emirates ID and original passport.
Is Musandam safe for tourists?
Yes. Musandam is one of the safest regions in the Gulf. Crime rates are very low, locals are welcoming, and medical care is decent in Khasab town. Our guides accompany you throughout.
When is the best time to visit Musandam?
October to April for calm seas and pleasant weather (22–30°C). Summer (May–September) is hot and humid, with afternoon khareef mists, but hotel rates are lower.
How far is Musandam from Dubai?
About 200 km / 2.5 hours by car to the Al Dara border, then another 1.5 hours to Khasab. Total journey 4–5 hours including border crossing.
Tours & Cruises
What is the best dhow cruise in Musandam?
The full-day dhow cruise (6 hours) is the most popular — it includes Telegraph Island snorkelling, dolphin spotting, lunch on board and a swim stop. Half-day (4 hours) is available if you are short on time.
How likely am I to see dolphins?
Very likely on a full-day cruise — we see dolphins on roughly 80% of trips, most often within the first 30 minutes of leaving Khasab harbour.
What is included in the dhow cruise price?
Full-day: dhow with shaded deck, life jackets, snorkel gear, lunch, soft drinks, fresh fruit, and a guide. Excludes Oman visa (50 AED) and gratuity.
Can I book a private dhow?
Yes. Private dhow charters are available for 2–40 guests. Pick the boat, route, and timing; we arrange the rest. Great for honeymoons and family groups.
On the Trip
What should I pack for a Musandam dhow cruise?
Swimwear, towel, sunscreen (reef-safe preferred), hat, sunglasses, light long-sleeve for the wind, motion sickness pills if you are prone, and a dry bag for your phone.
Is the water safe for swimming?
Yes. The waters around Telegraph Island and Khor Sham are clear, calm and used for daily swimming and snorkelling. Visibility is usually 6–15 metres.
Will I get seasick?
Most people are fine. The fjords are well-sheltered from open-sea swell. Take a motion sickness pill 30 minutes before departure if you have a history of seasickness.
Is there WiFi and phone signal?
WiFi at hotels and most dhows. Phone signal in town is good (Omantel / Ooredoo). Signal drops inside the fjords — enjoy the digital detox.
Logistics
Do I need 4x4 to drive in Musandam?
Not for Khasab town and the main Jebel Harim road — a sedan works fine in dry weather. For the Khor Najd descent and remote wadis, 4x4 is strongly recommended.
Can I use a UAE rental car in Musandam?
Yes, with a written NOC from the rental company authorising cross-border use, and Oman vehicle insurance (buy at the border, ~100 AED). Most major agencies (Hertz, Avis, Thrifty) provide NOCs for a small fee.
Are there ATMs in Khasab?
Yes — Bank Muscat, Bank Dhofar, NBO and HSBC have branches and ATMs in town. Most also accept international cards. Bring some AED/OMR cash for tips and small purchases.
What is the currency in Musandam?
Omani Rial (OMR). 1 OMR = 2.6 USD = 9.5 AED. We accept AED, OMR, USD and major cards. Most prices on this site are quoted in AED for your convenience.
