The complete first-time visitor guide to Musandam. What to know before you go, what to pack, what to expect, the do and don't list, the visa, the border, the dress code, the best time to visit, and the most common mistakes. Written by a 12-year operator.

10 things to know before you go

  1. Musandam is a separate governorate of Oman — it is not part of the UAE, and you need a separate visa, a separate border crossing, and a separate car insurance.
  2. The dhow cruise is the headline experience — 70% of our guests book the full-day dhow cruise as their main activity. It covers the dolphin watching, the Telegraph Island snorkel, the Omani lunch, and the Seebi Island swim stop.
  3. The best time to visit is October to April — the weather is cool, the sea is calm, and the dolphins are most active. The shoulder months (May and September) are also good.
  4. Khasab is a small town — the population is about 18,000, the corniche is 1.5 km, the whole town is walkable in 30 minutes. The rhythm of the day is the rhythm of the sea, the souq, and the prayer times.
  5. Musandam is a dry governorate — no alcohol is served anywhere. The hotels serve mocktails, the dhows serve soft drinks, the cafes serve Arabic coffee and chai.
  6. The dress code is conservative — cover your shoulders and knees, both on the dhow and in town. The dress code is the same for men and women.
  7. The border is open 24/7 — the Al Dara border is the only road crossing from the UAE to Musandam. The quietest hours are 22:00 to 06:00. The busiest are Friday 15:00 to 19:00.
  8. The road is good — a 2WD saloon car is fine for the drive from Dubai to Khasab. The only road that needs a 4x4 in Musandam is the track to Jebel Harim (mountain safari).
  9. The currency is the Omani Rial — 1 OMR = 9.8 AED. The border accepts both Omani Rials and UAE Dirhams. The restaurants and shops in Khasab accept both. The fish market only accepts Omani Rials.
  10. The people are friendly — Khasab is one of the safest towns in the region. The dress code is conservative but the people are welcoming. A smile and "As-salaam alaikum" go a long way.
