The border crossing — step by step
Buy Oman vehicle insurance
UAE car insurance does not cover Oman. Stop at the RAK-side insurance counter 200 m before the UAE exit booth. 1-day policy: 100 AED. 7-day policy: 175 AED. Pay cash, keep the receipt.
Cross the UAE exit
The UAE exit is automated for Salik-tagged cars. Drive up to the boom gate, scan the Mulkiya, pay 35 AED per person at the cashier booth, and drive through. 5–8 minutes on a quiet day, 20–30 minutes on a Friday afternoon.
Cross no-man's-land
The no-man's-land between the UAE and Oman is 800 m of empty road. There is a checkpoint halfway where the Omani police will wave you through. Keep your passport, UAE residence visa, and visa printout ready.
Get the Oman visa
If you have an e-visa, the border officer will scan it — no further paperwork. If you are getting the visa on arrival, walk into the visa office, fill in the application form, pay 5 OMR (50 AED) per person, get the stamp, drive through.
Pass the customs booth
The customs booth is 200 m past the visa office. The officer will check the car insurance, scan the passport, and wave you through. The whole customs process is 2–3 minutes.
Drive the mountain road to Khasab
The 90-minute drive from the border to Khasab is the scenic part. The road follows a graded mountain track through Wadi Khasab. Three pull-offs worth stopping at: the viewpoint 15 minutes after the border, the Wadi Khasab pull-off 40 minutes in, and the Lulu Hypermarket roundabout in Khasab town.
Frequently asked questions
What is the name of the Musandam border crossing?
The Al Dara border (also called Al Wajajah or Tibat). It is on the E18 between Ras Al Khaimah and Khasab. The border is open 24/7 for cars.
How much does it cost to cross the Musandam border?
Total for 2 people, 1 day: approximately 270 AED. This includes UAE exit fee (35 AED/person), Oman visa (50 AED/person), and Oman car insurance (100 AED/car for 1 day).
Do I need a visa to enter Musandam?
Yes. Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at the border for 50 AED per person. You can also apply for an e-visa online through the Royal Oman Police website before your trip.
Can I take a rental car to Musandam?
Yes, but you need a written NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the rental company authorising cross-border use into Oman. Most major agencies provide this for 50-150 AED.
How long does the border crossing take?
Before 09:00 on a weekday: 10-15 minutes. On Friday afternoon (15:00-19:00): 60-90 minutes. Average: 30-45 minutes.
Can I cross with a financed or mortgaged car?
You need an NOC from the bank that financed the car. Without it, customs will not let you take the car across. Some banks require full loan repayment before issuing the NOC.
Do families need special documents?
Yes. Dependent visa holders must be accompanied by their sponsor. If one parent is absent when travelling with children, official consent documents may be required.
Is there another border crossing to Musandam?
Yes, the Dibba border crossing from Fujairah. It is an alternative route but caters more to divers and has different procedures than Al Dara.
Can I bring alcohol into Musandam?
No. Oman has a strict no-alcohol policy for tourists entering by land. Your car will likely be checked at customs. Do not attempt to bring alcohol across.
What is the self-transfer service?
We drive your car from Dubai to Khasab while you fly or relax. You avoid the border stress, the mountain driving, and the fatigue. The package includes return driving.
