Route overview
There are 4 car rental agencies in Khasab. The biggest is the Oman Rent-a-Car office at the airport; the other three are local independents. We recommend booking at least a week ahead in winter, especially for 4x4s.
A sedan is fine for Khasab town, the Jebel Harim graded road, and the Al Dara border. A 4x4 is required for the Khor Najd switchback, the Wadi Bih route, and any off-road driving. The insurance is comprehensive; the deductible is 100 OMR for sedans, 200 OMR for 4x4s.
The agencies offer pickup and drop-off at the airport, the ferry terminal, or your hotel. We can arrange the rental on your behalf, with delivery to your hotel and 24/7 roadside assistance.
Step-by-step
1. Book at least a week ahead in winter
Availability is tightest in November–March, especially for 4x4s. Book through our office or directly with one of the four agencies.
2. Bring your passport, visa and driving licence
You need a passport with a valid Oman visa, an international driving permit (or your home-country licence if it is in English or Arabic), and a credit card for the deposit.
3. Pick up the car
Pickup is at the airport, the ferry terminal, or your hotel. The agency will do a walk-around with you and note any existing damage.
4. Return the car
Return is at the same location. The agency does the walk-around again and refunds the deposit.
Border procedure
No border crossing (within Oman)
Operator tip
If you are self-driving from the UAE, you do not need a Khasab rental car. If you are flying or taking the ferry, a Khasab rental is the right pick.
