How to choose the right transport option
Choose self-drive if…
- • You are comfortable driving across an international border
- • You have a rental car with a cross-border NOC (or your own car with Oman insurance)
- • You want flexibility to stop at viewpoints on the mountain road
- • You want to do the border at your own pace (best for Friday afternoon returns)
- • You are 2+ people (the per-person cost of the transfer is comparable to fuel + insurance)
Choose transfer if…
- • You do not have a car, or your rental car cannot cross the border
- • You are 1–2 people (cheaper than self-drive once you factor in fuel, insurance, and the 5-hour round-trip drive)
- • You want to start the holiday the moment you leave the hotel
- • You want a local driver who knows the border queue and the best time to cross
- • You are on a day trip from Dubai and you do not want to drive back at 22:00
Operator tip — the fastest days to cross
The fastest 30 days of the year at the Al Dara border are the first week of June and the second week of September, when UAE schools are on holiday but Khasab is not yet busy. The slowest 30 days are the first week of January, the week of Eid al-Fitr, and the week of Eid al-Adha. If you have flexibility, cross before 09:00 on a Wednesday or Saturday, or after 19:00 on a Friday.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to get to Khasab from Dubai?
The cheapest way is self-drive: 200 km, about 100 AED in fuel, 50 AED per person for the Oman visa, 35 AED per person for the UAE exit, and 100 AED for a 1-day Oman insurance policy. Total for 2 people, 1 day: about 370 AED. The transfer is 600 AED one-way, so self-drive is cheaper for 2+ people.
What is the fastest way to get to Khasab from Dubai?
Self-drive without traffic is the fastest: 2.5 hours. The transfer is 3 hours (one pickup, one drop, but the driver does not have to stop at the border for paperwork). The fly option does not exist — there is no commercial airport between Dubai and Khasab.
Can I take a bus from Dubai to Khasab?
There is no direct public bus from Dubai to Khasab. The Mwasalat bus runs from Muscat to Khasab (6 hours, 12 OMR), and the Sharjah-Khasab shared taxi runs from Sharjah to Khasab (3.5 hours, 50 AED). For everyone else, the options are self-drive, private transfer, or shared transfer.
Is the Al Dara border open 24/7?
Yes, the border is open 24/7 for cars and for pedestrians. The quietest hours are 22:00 to 06:00. The busiest hours are Friday 15:00 to 19:00 (return traffic from Khasab) and Saturday morning (return traffic to Khasab).
Do I need a 4x4 to drive to Khasab?
No. The road from Dubai to Khasab is fully paved and graded, and a 2WD saloon car is fine in any season. The last 75 km on the Oman side is a mountain road with hairpin bends, but it is paved, well-signed, and has guard rails. The only road that needs a 4x4 in Musandam is the track to Jebel Harim (mountain safari).
